The Value of Updated Equipment: A New Optical Comparator

It’s the end of an era at Certified Grinding & Machine. Recently, we have welcomed a new Optical Comparator to our facility and we could not be more excited. This article will explore the purpose of Optical Comparators as well as assess the benefits of updating older machinery.

Certified Grinding & Machine owns one of the oldest Optical Gaging Products, a Model BL-10 Optical Comparator, in the country and we still use it. So, when it came time to buy a new comparator with all of the latest technical gadgetry, we obviously looked to Optical Gaging Products (or Quality Vision International, as they are known today) for an up-to-date model.

What is an Optical Comparator?

If you are not familiar with optical comparators, they allow for non-contact measurement, observation, and recording of both dimensional accuracy and surface defects in centerless ground parts.

In short, optical comparators are a measuring device that determines if a part’s dimensions are correct for its intended use via lenses and projection. Optical comparators provide a precise and clear picture of the part you are working with.

The Benefits of an Updated Optical Comparator

Newer models, such as the Focus Model 300, are upgraded with high-tech software enhancements such as “edge detection technology” to improve accuracy and ease of use.

A high-quality optical comparator is critical to the success of a Centerless Grinding shop. It is our ideal resource for quickly and accurately measuring tight tolerances for features such as radii and “grind to length” dimensions. This allows our operators to seamlessly check their parts and return to their machines.

An updated Optical Comparator provides the following benefits:

  • Efficiency
  • Reduced production costs
  • Increased capabilities
  • Better service for customers

As with everything we do, our customers are our first priority.

Our new optical comparator allows us to prioritize excellent customer care and efficiency, providing clients with both the best and fastest results possible. (And yes, we still have the relic…it’s kind of hard to let it go after all of these years…).
